Dust Bowl Farmers and Blue Gold

A few years ago, a young friend was complaining about regulations that would make it difficult to mine for gold in Nevada.  The process for mining gold contaminates the groundwater with toxic levels of arsenic.  For me the choice - especially in Nevada desert - between water and gold was clear.  But he failed to see the value of the water compared to the gold till I told him it would take wheelbarrows of his gold to buy water.

Like my young friend, the dust bowl farmers resisted early attempts at to ease the effects of dust storms.  They rejected erosion control and crop rotation as vehemently as the Chamber of Commerce rejects the scientific evidence of Climate Change.  They thought it was a government lie.

He denies climate change like a Dust bowl farmer - then sells you gold bars.

A mighty contest, largely unreported in North America and Europe, is taking place around the world concerning the ownership and control of the earth’s dwindling water supplies. Maude Barlow speaks to the looming water crisis and the need for us to recognize water as a human right and ensure it stays in the public trust. Maude Barlow is the Chairperson of the Council of Canadians and a board member of Washington-based Food and Water Watch.
